Question:

Questions on converting my DVD's to MPEG-4 and the poor dark quality scenes I get?

I'm using DVD shrink to remove encryption and then I'm taking the VOB file and I'm converting them mpeg4 files using the encoders provided by handbrake which are x264, xvid, and FFmpeg. I've tried several different settings from film, apple tv, iphone, and ipod high rez and I get the same problem with all of these, scnes that are dark look horrible. They are full of artifacts and no matter how high of settings I try they are always very prominent.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I would love to achieve the same quality Apple acheives in iTunes even if I have to use bigger file sizes but nothing I've tried has worked. Any suggestions or is this just the nature of mpeg4 encoding unless you are a giant like Apple with insane tools at your disposale?
