Questions on flea bombing?

My mom was supposed to bring over flea medication for my kitten today but she's got plans. Tonight we were going to put the drops on the kitten and than flea bomb out house. Is it pointless to bomb the house tonight and put the flea drops on him tomorrow?

  1. BE VERY CAREFUL.................Some flea meds will kill kittens, if they're too young.  Have you read everything on the flea meds, to be sure they'll be ok for your kitten???

Also, bombing the house has to be done when NO ONE (including animals, fish, etc) are in the house.  Or, you could end up killing them, too.

If you get flea meds from your VET, at least you KNOW they'll be ok for your kitten.  You didn't say how old she is, but at least now you know the dangers for her, if she's tiny.

    BE CAREFUL......and GOOD LUCK.

  2. I agree with the others on the point that this should be a good vet quality flea medication formula that is safe for kittens.

Please do not use any of the OTC medications on any cat (or dog).  The OTC brands use a synthetic of the vet quality chemicals and it is highly toxic.  Symptoms can range from serious illness to death.   I know from experience..luckily my cats did not die, but I made all of them sick (5 at the time).  I had to take 5 cats to the vet to cure them and still had to fight the fleas.  This was in summer of 1993 and no matter how much the vet products cost, I will not put my cats through that again.

Now for the flea bombs.  Like the others said, they can be a waste of your time and money.  The flea has a 4 stage life cycle and the egg and the cocoon stages are resilient to many treatments like this.  Plus, you, your family members and the pets will need to vacate the house for many hours until the fumes dissipate.  Then you will spend hours cleaning every surface to remove all the chemical residue that can be harmful to you, your family and the pets.  That is a lot of extra work for an ineffective treatment!

A less toxic way is to wash anything that can be washed (bed linens, rugs, pet beds) in the normal temperature setting for that fabric and regular detergent.  Then vacuum all the hard surfaces and upholstered furniture.  Take your vaccum collections to the outside trash every few days.

If you have carpet, and you wish to speed up the process, you can use the OTC flea powders.  Just sprinkle this your in carpet..keep kitten away..and vacuum.  This will help kill the eggs and coccoons that are buried in the carpet fibers as you vacuum and in the dust cannister or bag.

The third link below is information on using the Sevin Dust.  It does not recommend using it inside the home, but I have heard of people doing that.  You can use the Sevin Dust outside your home to keep fleas out.

Good luck with your flea battle.

    Purrs to you and kitten.

  3. Are you sure you wanna use something so drastic and toxic? I've heard of cats dying of cancer in their teens after a flea bomb was used. Personally I would NEVER subject my babies to such a chemical bomb. They leave a residue on your furniture and the smell stays for ages!

    Please reconsider? xx

  4. Firstly filess bombs are a waste of money, and secondly I hope your not using shop bought flea drops.

You should really go to your vet and by a house spray and drops from them, they can then be used at the same time.

I work as a veterinary nurse and the amount of cats and kittens that we see which have been treated with flea treatment from a shop (especially bob martin treatment) and have ended up fitting and in a lot of pain isunbelievablee.

    Please take this advice.

  5. My advice... put the flea medication on the kitten first (be sure what you have is safe for kittens - age matters!). If it's a top-spot type of treatment, it'll either make fleas jump off your kitten, kill them, or keep them away... in any case, living fleas that aren't on your kitten can have eggs. And eggs usually live through flea bombs (stubborn!). So... give the kitten the treatment... vacuum the carpets well... wait a week... vacuum really well again... THEN flea bomb.
