Questions on installing recessed bathroom medicine cabinet?

I am redoing my bathroom and want to add a larger, recessed bathroom medicine cabinet mirror. This bathroom isn't super big and the cabinet I currently have now is outside mount and I feel by sticking out, it visually takes up space. I am looking at cabinets on line that are inside mount and many of are 24" or wider. I'm extremely handy and know I can install it myself if I have just a few questions answered: Aren't all normal studs 16" apart so wouldn't the cabinet have to be 16" wide or less? If I cut out a section of the studs to allow a cabinet to fit inside, wouldn't that weaken the overall structure of my wall? I'm confused, please help!

you got it, sister!  16" on center is the correct measurement between wall studs.  if you wish to install a cabinet wider than that, you will have to tear out the drywall and cut the studs.  then install blocking (or bracing) between the studs in order to retain the structural integrity of the wall.  basically, it's like framing in a window.  you might want to consult a professional to verify that the wall is not a load bearing wall before making any changes to the structure!!!  you may have to get a construction permit if the wall is load bearing.

I've done just what you are asking--twice.  Basically the studs usually are at 16" on center.  What you have to do is cut out the stud that is in the center and then run a 2x4 across the top and bottom of the opening from the remaining studs on either side to hold up the stud you cut.  Should not be a problem unless the wall is a bearing wall that is holding up the roof structure (if its just holding up the ceiling sheetrock thats not a bearing wall).  To do this you probably need to cut a bigger hole in the sheet rock than just the size of the cabinet.
