  2. I am useless for advice on singing.  I have been playing guitar for about a decade, though.

Guitar is very frustrating to learn at first, and actually hurts.  You will develop callouses on your fingers, and your fingers will get stronger.    I recommend learning on an electric, since the strings are thinner and more easy to press.  Check your yellow pages for guitar lessons.  Ask someone at your local guitar shop if they know anyone who gives lessons.  (Some shops offer lessons).  As a singer, I recommend you learn how to read music, and learn on a cheap portable keyboard. I wish I had learned keys first, since guitar kind of discourages you to read music if you're playing contemporary music.
