  1. Yes, wood stoves do cause a lot of pollution, but if that's all you have to heat your home, then the only thing else you can do with a lot less pollution is a pellet stove. I believe right now they are trying to ban wood burning fireplaces and wood stoves on all new homes in San Francisco. I don't think that is right. You  may need a permit in your house unless it already has a fireplace, then no, just buy it.

  2. You need a permit to make sure you don't burn down your home from a bad install.  I don't know if the smoke is more or less polluted than fossil fuels, but it smells a lot better.

  3. More pollution? Sort of. The carbon dioxide emitted is the same amount that would be emitted if the wood were to rot in the forest. There is more particulate emission, though. However, this is relatively mild pollution, especially if you compare it to the emissions from a plant that burns coal to provide electricity to heat your home. Personally, I prefer particulates to acid rain. Another factor is the source of the wood. The arrangement I have is with local landscapers who drop off rounds when they're cutting in my neighborhood. They drive less (pollution saving there), the landfills last longer, and they and I save money. I also don't have to go to the gym; I get plenty of exercise splitting those rounds. The ash produced from wood-burning goes to sweeten my soil.

When we had the stove installed, we had to get a building permit. In return, we had someone from the township inspect the stove and assure us that it had been installed correctly.

  4. Well it can, but burning wood is a natural occurance, in life that usally brings forth growth. Most of the smoke will dissipate in the atmosphere to nothing toxic. it is the treated wood that cause environmentally hazardous problems
