Someone is coming to try Rocky on Monday, (this is the advert - http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aj1bztSxylsAsKryv8MZPQwhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080729120451AApSKnk) What questions should I ask her? Also, is a month's trial acceptable? Any other hints and tips? I will of course be drawing up a contract. Any advice lol! Thanks :-)

  1. One, you want to see how she handles the horse, on the ground and in the saddle.

Two, if you're not keeping the horse at your location, you need to find out where he'll be, how long she's been affiliated with the barn or lived at the place.  Go look and see.

You want a complete list of contacts, including professional references...farrier...vet...trainer.

I also want to know where people work, and how long they've been there.

If they show dodgy work or rental history, they're probably going to be irresponsible in other areas too.  A big red flag...if they have had horses but don't have the vet/farrier references...I'd say buh-bye.

  2. How long has she been riding?

What is she looking to do with him?

Has she looked after horses before?

What is the basic grooming routine? (just so you know how much she knows)

Get her to put on the tack

Ask her to lead the horse

Just general care and stable management questions.

The most important is to sort out the money issue. Make sure she knows what she is paying for and what you are paying for.

I finished sharing a horse a few weeks ago becuase the owner or I did not draw up a contract and I ended up paying for everything (even though it was not my horse).

  3. the b.h.s have a loan agreement contract that you can download from there site  just amend for yourself and get it signed. my horse is on loan at moment and I've done it for 3 months renewable.  make sure you consider insurance, tack, rugs, feed, what can and can't be done with the horse, what bedding is to be used, what vet, what happens in emergency and anything else which affects your horse. good luck

  4. how long have they been riding?

do they feel confident with your horse?

if there will be anyone else riding the horse?

for a month notice before giving up?

which days would be best for her and you?

and a month trial is the best thing to do before she starts with the horse and he might not be right for her

  5. experience, if they have loaned before, what they intend on doing, what height & age they have previously ridden on

    etc.

  6. I would charge by the month. Experience with horses. What are they going to do with him.

  7. charge by the month
