what is the reason why ICD code needs to revise each year????

  1. Probably because new diseases and procedures are emerging. For example, I doubt if bird flu was in the ICD-9 10 years ago(not sure if this is totally correct, but  hope you see my point). And new surgical procedures are developing all the time. So the ICD-9 has to change to accommodate those changes.  


  2. Because our knowledge of the various forms of cancer are growing each year. This affects everything from cell type to histology to surgery codes and treatment. The book that you see is perhaps only revised annually, but in the field of public health in which I work we are constantly revising our various manuals several times a year to accommodate these changes.
