Quevega triumphs in Ladbrokes World Series Hurdle
Quevega continued her brilliant form by winning the Ladbrokes World Series Hurdle (Grade 1) at Punchestown in Ireland on Thursday, April 25, 2013. She has been demonstrating some terrific speed and jumping skills over the years and seems unstoppable at the
moment.
The nine-year-old mare was given pretty decent odds for victory, as her performances have been really well in recent times. However, there was immense pressure on her, as the conditions were not easy at all.
There had been plenty of rain at Punchestown over the past few days, thus the ground was heavy. This meant that all of the contestants needed to put in an extra effort to be competitive.
Moreover, the distance to cover was three miles, which made things even more difficult for everyone. However, the situation was same for all of the runners and they had to fight it out for their respective owners.
Quevega entered the competition with a starting price of 6 to 4 and the punters showed immense confidence in her abilities. She managed to attract a lot of bets in her favour and did not disappoint anyone in the end.
After starting off steadily, she made up some positions as the race progressed. She was jumping really well, which allowed her to pressurise her rivals throughout. Once she got into the lead, it was pretty clear that no one would be able to challenge her
for the top spot. In the end, she managed to extend her lead to five lengths.
Her jockey Ruby Walsh was really happy with the outcome of the race and said, “She's a brilliant little mare. She has been exceptionally well placed and trained. She is so accurate with her jumping, she travels and she is honest. She is the real deal.”
On the other hand, Quevega’s trainer Willie Mullins was delighted too, but he said that the competition would have been better, if Solwhit was also a part of the race.
He said, “I felt for Solwhit's connections. It could happen to any horse. We are not afraid to enter Quevega in the two-mile championship races, she has that much speed. She is older and stronger and handles that ground better.”
