Third-tier side Quevilly beat Stade Rennais 2-1 in the second semi-final of the Coupe de France to set up a clash with Olympique Lyonnais in the final at the Stade de France
Stade Rennais’ four-decade wait for some silverware will go on for at least one more year as Frederic Antonetti’s men lost to third-division amateur side US Quevilly in the semi-final of the Coupe de http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899.
The win was yet another Ligue 1 scalp for Quevilly who had beaten the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Toulouse-FC-c40751 and Olympique de Marseille on their way to the semis.
SM Caen’s Stade http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michel-c25453 D’Ornano was the venue for the second semi-final and Stade Rennais got off to a perfect start when Julien Feret scored Rennais’ first in just the eighth minute of the game.
However, Quevilly levelled the game thanks to Karim Herouat just after the hour mark. More drama was to unfold as Anthony Laup scored in the last minute of the game to give the Normandy side yet another win over a Ligue 1 side.
The game could barely have started better for Frederic Antonetti’s side. Yann M’Vila, who over the past few weeks, has been attracting a lot of criticism fired in a shot that hit the post. However, the ricochet feel kindly for Feret who had the simplest
of tap ins to make it 1-0 to the away side.
Turkish international Mevlut Erdinc had two glorious opportunities to put the game beyond Quevilly but the former PSG man’s finishing always asked for more.
The Normandians, who had put http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 to the sword in the quarterfinals, were not going to give up and the hosts kept on playing some brave football that was easy to the eye.
Benoit Costil was once again called upon to deny a Herouat effort early in the second half. However, the Frenchman could not do anything about it as the ball went past him to make it 1-1.
Costil was yet again called into action when he had to save a Laup effort deep into stoppage time. However, there was a feeling in the air that an upset might be on the cards.
And the decisive/defining moment of the game came virtually through the last kick of the game. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Boye-c18840 passed an excellent ball towards Laup who slotted the ball beyond Costil to send the Quevilly faithful into delirium.
Quevilly now have a date with destiny when they face http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130 in the final of the competition at the Stade de France. Rennais on the other hand, will have to wait more to end their trophy drought.
