unmarried woman gets pregnant and is therefore an adulteress. the town ostracises her, especially because she does not reveal the identity of the baby's father. she is consistently chastised as a sinner and the whole time the baby's father is the priest, who deals with his guilt by self mutilation.

the book basically demonstrates the repression of puritanical culture and the how society conditions behaviour. everybody lies. basically, people in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones.

its about this woman name hester who has a baby with a preacher [no one knows] who is not her husband. they lock her up and put her in jail. her punishment is the wear the scarlet letter A on her chest for the rest of her life. then seven years later, her husband tries to kill the pastor she had the baby with convincing the man that he is a doctor. the child is evil and knows that the pastor is her father. in the end, the pastor, hester and the child ended up being together.
