Ok whenever I start driving whenever the engine hits 2K RPM's I hear this sort of grinding noise outside my car, I believe that it's the transmission since it's rpm dependent but I'm not sure what it could be really. Any help in figuring it out would be much appriciated and also an estimate on how much it'd cost to get fixed at the dealer. Thanks

  1. I don't have an answer, but this might help you isolate it:

Try slowly reving the engine with the windows open and the car not moving.  Do you get the sound when you hit 2K RPM?  If so, then it might not be the transmission.

When driving (with no traffic around) put the car in neutural and try reving it again.

Now take that informaiton to a mechanic.

  2. might be your torqe converter,,should be a higher pitch grinding sound

    on our place $3,000 easy

  3. It actually might be another part of your car vibrating to a certain harmonic level caused at a certain engine speed.  More than likely, it is directly or indirectly connected to your engine and when it reaches that level it resonates- kinda like a tuning fork.  My guess is that it is possibly at or near the exhaust as the open pipe will help carry the vibration.  Check any loose exhaust parts as well as any heat shields- especially around the catalytic converter and muffler.  These are like pie pans- thin metal and you know how loud a pie pan is when you drop it.  Check for loose clamps and bolts.  Also check the exhaust manifold and its shield and for a loose air filter.
