Quick Credit Union Question

Question

Do you have to have savings account at a Credit Union? I cant find anything that says you have to a job to apply for , but someone older told me that a Job is required.

In order to belong to a credit union, you need to work for the company that it services...it's part of the UNION thing...if you think about it, it makes sense.

You have to be a member of the union, and you have to have a specific job to be a member.

Every credit union has different criteria to become a member.  You should check some in your area to see if you qualify to be a member.  You don't necessarily have to have a job although many credit unions are strictly for employees at a particular company.  You just need to look around and see what's available to you.

Most CUs, but not all, open their doors to people who do not work in that particular field.

Many offer openings to people who join certain civic, or other, groups. If you have a relative that is in the field you may be able to join. If it's a local CU they may allow you to join if you worship in that city/county/state .... basically many, many different ways to join a CU

For example, with NASA FCU if you join the National Space Society (for a small fee) you can open an account with the CU, and be able to apply for loans or other types of credit.  

With Navy FCU, if a close relative is in "any" branch of the service (navy, army, marines, etc) and has an account with that credit union, you may be able to qualify under their name (you would have your own acct that is separate from theirs)



Many CUs will post the criteria on their websites under the member or membership listings describing how a person can join

Call your local Credit Union and inquire. The credit union in my area is a school credit union, but they also allow the residents in like 9 surrounding cities be members also. So definitely call!
