Quick Flip kept her unbeaten record intact after upsetting the Sandpiper Stakes at Tampa Bay for trainer Teresa Pompay
The 2-year-old Teresa Pompay trained filly, Quick Flip, remained unbeaten as she made the outside of the Tampa Bay dirt track her own to upset the $75,000 Sandpiper Stakes her own that featured exclusively 2-year-old fillies on 10 December, 2011.
Under jockey Pedro Cotto Jr. Quick Flip was the prominent filly right from the get go, as she tracked down the pace setter, Red Hot Doll, to go home free in the mid stretch to assume the lead and win over her eventual runner up opponent by one and a half lengths.
In the process, the Kentucky bred daughter of Speightstown, out of mare Motel Lass by Bates Motel, Quick Flip recorded her third straight victory on the trot after conquering Parx Racing and Monmouth race course on the way.
She really let it all out in the stretch, as she zipped past her opponents to top the six furlong distance in 1 minute and 10.96 seconds.
The outsider stunned the field as, Blue Forty, tried her best to draw even, but her gutsy attempt was in vain as she finished one and a half length off Quick Flip while steaming down the track.
Red Hot Doll, set brisk fractions but got overhauled by the favoured, Live Every Day, who finished on the board at third, while Red Hot Doll couldn’t put much effort when it mattered as she weakened to finish fourth in the final furlong.
“I thought she looked great in the paddock today, and I loved her,” Pompay said. “Her odds were high but, well, I bet her and I’m very happy. She looked great and she’s been training great. She’s done nothing wrong. She is getting better every race and there is a lot of room for her to get even better and better.”
Cotto, was ecstatic after knowing how much chemistry Quick Flip and him have as he also guided the filly to a win at Monmouth on 23 October.
“I knew she would like this track, and I learned riding her up north she was more than just a quick horse,” Cotto said. “She overcame some trouble at Monmouth and still just drew away. This is a sweet filly and I hope I can ride her some more.”
