Quick Wit after Doncaster set to conquer Newmarket in Darley Stakes (Group 3)
Saturday’s Group 3, Darley Stakes at Newmarket looks an open event. On good to soft, thirteen speedy horses will compete for a handy prize of £31,191. Not much time is left for the punters to make their moves. The officials are due to start the 1m1f meeting
at 17:15 GMT.
Although it is very competitive, a chance can be taken on Quick Wit, who is aiming to repeat last month’s feat. In the Harriet Powell Handicap at Doncaster, Saeed Bin Suroor’s charge raised many eyebrows by beating a few giants of the sport.
A decent start helped him put some pressure on the leaders. No lead came to him in the middle stages, but the dashing horse did not lose confidence. He stayed on to lead in the last 100 yards, and claimed the first rank easily by three quarters of a length.
Bred by Ptarmigan Bloodstock Limited, the 5-year-old was very strong at the finish to get the better of other Godolphin-owned runners, ridden by Frankie Dettori (today on French Navy) and Mickael Barzalona (today on Mandaean).
The odds are not in his favour, but the latest act was solid enough to suggest that he can take the big prize in today’s mega event. Among the others, the strongest one is Stipulate.
Trained by Sir Henry Cecil, the 3-year-old ran well in three of the last four graded appearances, but without any success. On his latest Group 2 outing at Newmarket, the son of Dansili claimed the fourth place behind Penitent.
Owned by K. Abdulla, the skilful colt has a fair amount of exposure in the graded events, and should not be underestimated. He also knows this surface very well, and has sealed a comprehensive win here at the start of this season.
Trade Commissioner may also resume his progressive journey. After clinching two consecutive wins in handicap company, the John Gosden-trained stepped up to the graded level, but failed terribly. On his latest start, the 4-year-old finished at bottom of the
table.
Stipulate has earned the highest odds due to his decent experience at the graded level, but it is worth chancing on Quick Wit, who was runner-up on his previous Newmarket venture.
