anyone have any ideas how to fix a 4 cylinder seized engine

My car just came out of the repair shop a few weeks ago, basically there was a oil pressure drop/compression or some c**p like that

The mechanic replaced the rings (it was blowing smoke before it went in) i went to pick up the car and it seemed to be running fine then 30 mins later i was driving down the freeway but then noticed black smoke comming out the exhaust and it locked up,i pulled over and got roadside assistance but he said it had seized up, because there was about a 1ltr of oil in the bloody engine, the d**n repair shop forget to fill it up idiots, anyway i heard WD40 and oil sprayed into the sparkys can realease the pistons, will this work or would it be better to get the cylinder rehoned, new rings etc...

its a Mitsubishi Cordia/ Tredia pretty oldskool but its been my project for a few years now...cheers

  1. Another rebuild. I'm assuming it will be no charge to you. Even if you free the engine up, the bearings and cylinders are probably badly scored, and the oil pump fried. The bearings are now most likely shot, and the crankshaft could be damaged. Bummer.

  2. You should not have to worry about it. If you took it to a reputable shop to be fixed they are responsible to fix it properly. Any job like that should come with at least a three month warranty.

The block of the motor probably will have to be completely rebuilt, it would be better to have a short motor replacement, that should come with a 12 month warranty..

  3. Ouch... With as much as that motor has been through at this point, it needs to be torn down, examined and most likely rebuilt. An oil-starvation lockup usually means something melted to something else, or something got burned up.

  4. Have you talked to the shop that "fixed" your engine?  They should be liable for the repair.  What state do you live in?  Where I live you could report them to the Bureau of Automotive Repair.

If it seized up, it needs to be rebuilt. No oil (1 ltr) will score the bearings in just about all revolving parts.  Seized = ruined!  No fast fix other than a complete rebuild.

  5. Sorry to hear about the fiasco mate. Unfortunately as an engine seizes it begins to melt the engine block and piston rings together. A heavy duty solvent may break apart the rings, but you will still have all this wonderful scoring all up and down your cylinder walls. Even if the engine has any compression after this maneuver, it will be CLAG-tastic(or as we americans say "a blue smoke machine").

In short, a seized engine needs to broken down, surfaces decked & cylinders honed and rebuilt correctly. It honestly maybe cheaper to find a used engine and do a swap. Then if you wish you can rebuild the seized donk and still have a running car.

    Good luck.

  6. Prevention is better than cure, so pretty much your engins F@!*ed just like your bogen face use oil to lubricate your engine next time.

  7. Sorry to say this, but your engine is toast.

If the engine died 30 minutes after leaving the shop, you need to bring it back and ask them to fix it. Hopefully, you will get an apology and a speedy repair. A really good shop would never risk their reputation by turning their backs on you after messing up. I know our local shop messed up my girlfriends car once so it leaked oil all over my driveway. They not only picked it up and did the repair right, but the service manager came out and cleaned my driveway. I went from being really pissed off to being totally impressed. Hopefully your shop is like that.

Are you in the UK? I have no idea what the laws are in your country, but in the US, you would have a pretty good chance of winning if you took them to small claims court.

That really sucks. I hope it all works out.
