Just a question regarding the CAST rule...

Lets say i found tan to be negative because the point is (-2, -7)... but it's in the positive quadrant for tan, does the cast rule mean all i do is change my final answer to make tan positive... or am i missing something?

  1. Hi,

I don't know what the CAST rule is, but I use the saying "All Students Take Calculus" to remember the order for the positive values in the 4 quadrants.

A- All functions are positive in the first quadrant.

S- Sine (and its recirocal cosecant) are the only positive valued functions in the second quadrant.

T- Tangent (and its recirocal cotangent) are the only positive valued functions in the third quadrant.

C- Cosine (and its recirocal secant) are the only positive valued functions in the fourth quadrant.

So, an angle from the origin through (-2,-7) is in the third quadrant where tangent is positive.

    I hope that helps!! :-)
