  1. solve it for y?

    y^2 = 25 - x^2

    y = square root of (25 - x^2)

    solve for x?  y^2 = 25 - x^2

           y^2 + x^2 = 25

    x^2 = 25 - y^2

    x = square root (25 - y^2)

    simplify it  --->       y^2 = (5-x) (5+x)

  2. There are two unknown values, so there can be more than one answer

  3. what are you trying to solve... if you want to know the value of x and y, it is not possible for one cannot solve two variables with one equation, one needs a system of at least two...

    but if you are solving for a circle...

    (x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = r^2

    the center is (0,0)... since h and k have no value...

    radius is 5... the square root of 25...

  4. y^2=25-x^2

    y^2+x^2=25

    sqrt x^2+y^2=25

           x+y= +5 or -5

  5. General rules when solving equations...  you can only solve the equation for the unknowns  IF and only if you have as much unknown as the equation.

    ie>  if you have 2 unknowns that you need to solve, you need 2 different equations (not multiples of the same equation)  and if you have 5 unknowns, you'd need five etc....

    so in the above question, you have 2 unknown variables to solve, but only 1 equation, so it can't be solved with a definite distinct solution

    good luck

  6. it cant be solved because you need the value of x and y and normally you would just leave if but if you leave it as is, you canot do anthing because it is y to the second power equals 25 minus x to the second power. trust me i had this exact same problem on my homework and got it right.

  7. If there no addition conditions:

    (X,Y) are any points on the circle :

    center at (0,0) radius=5

    If give an additional condition:

    such as:  X, Y both are positive  integers

    =>  two solutions:  (3,4 ) or (4,3)

    etc..
