  1. You can do whatever you want. If the baby doesn't latch on to your breast while you are at the hospital (mine didn't until second or third week), you should ask a nurse if you can borrow a breast pump. Pump whatever you can and bottle feed.  The first three days you get so little milk (colostrum) out that you can even feed with a dropper (thats what I did).

Did you mean bottle feed formula or breast milk?  If you mean breast milk, then you should try to get your baby used to both your breast and the bottle because you will need your baby's suckling in order to keep a healthy milk supply.  I have been told by many that pumping alone cannot sustain your milk supply.

Right now I am at the point where I can pump until nothing else comes out, then feed my baby 10 minutes later and he is able to get milk.  Your baby is the best breast pump.

Not sure what you mean by "ok", but the longer you give your baby breastmilk the better. However, you can do whatever is convenient for you.  Breast milk is the best thing you can give your child, but I'm sure there are comparable formulas out on the market that you can try.

If work is your concern, then do what I suggest in paragraph 2 and pump and store some of your milk every day, so that when you go back to work, your baby can still have your milk.

Don't listen to Sarah! The best milk for the baby is the colostrum, which is your milk the first 1-3 days.  If thats all you can give your baby, then it's better than nothing.

  2. If you're not going to continue to breastfeed when you get home, you might as well just skip it altogether. If your delivery is normal you will be in the hospital about two days- there really isn't much point in breastfeeding for two days.

What are your reasons? Do you intend to pump but bottle feed when at home?
