Quick one - if one is taking Proton pump inhibitors, then what is the bad side of not having the acid in your stomach? ie. wont food not be digested correctly?

  1. H1 inhibitors aren't intended to "completely suppress" acid production, rather to keep in within physiologic constraints.  Certainly, all absence of acid in the stomach isn't good, so PPIs aren't intended to completely keep the gastric lumen "proton free," rather just enough to discourage heartburn and its sequelae.
