Question:

Quick question on my tennis serve?

I notice that when I practice serves, if I bend my knees and kind of 'spring up' to the ball when I hit it, I can hit it really hard. Is this the correct form? I also was wondering if the whole 'wrist flick' thing should come naturally or if I should subconsciously be doing it in the follow through? Thanks.

  1. yea, that is the "proper" form, which is a good one. no one serves are exactly alike. sometimes another guys serve is really awkard looking, serves well. as for the wrist, im not sure, it came naturally for me. but if you want to make it second nature, at the beginning where you put the ball to your racket, point the racket more parallel to the baseline, bending your wrist at the beginning. that should get you some snap when you accelerate to the ball.

  2. Oh absolutely, thats exactly the way it needs to be done. It's the kinetic chain as it's called. Check out Boris Becker's serves.

When you begin you gotta force yourself to do all these things including the wrist flick, but after sometime you'll be doing it without even thinking about it :)

just out of curiousity, how far up the fence does your serve hit after bouncing in the service box? I can get it a couple of feet at times, may be 3-4 also but hardly ever, most at the base or a little before the fence.

  3. it is good if you can hit it harder. also try to place the ball in position where your opponent find it harder to return. the wrist flick is also good. it enables faster racquet speed to increase acceleration. try to flick your wrist without hurting yourself. hope it helps :)
