  1. I added some descriptions to help you understand.

1: What kind of waveform is sound?

    Compression

    - This is why you can hear around corners.

    2: Velocity equals ________ times _________.

    wavelength; frequency

    - wavelength is horizontal distance, mulitply by frequency and now we have distance per time.  Also know as speed or the magnitude of velocity.

3: The amplitude of a soundwave corresponds to the _________ of the sound.

    loudness

-This has to do with displacement, imagine dropping a book from two different heights.  The higher the book, the louder the noise.

4: The pitch of a sound wave is the same as the __________.

    frequency

    - Pitch is caused by you ear drum vibrating back and forth,  the quicker this happens the higher the pitch.

5: Light travels _______ than sound

    faster

-Easiest to remember that planes have broken the sound barrier (think sonic boom).  The term Mach refers to how many times the speed of sound travels  The speed of light has not been broken by mankind yet.

6: Does sound travel in outer space?

No - sound travels by moving particles.  Since space is a relative vacuum their are no particles to move.

7: As an ambulance approaches and passes you, the pitch of its sirens will often change. This is called ______________.

    Doppler Effect

-This is the definition of Doppler Effect.  Not much else can be said.

8: An echo is caused by the _________ of sound waves

    reflection

    - Just like light reflects off of mirrors and you see yourself.  Sound reflects off of objects arranged perfectly and you can hear yourself.

9: The intensity of sound is measured in __________.

    decibels

    -Again this is a definition.

10: The frequency of a string can be __________ by shortening it.

    raised

    - Imagine that two strings, one shorter than the other, were bent to look like waves.  Both waves have to have the same amplitude.  This means the shorter string has a shorter wavelength.  Shorter wavelength means higher frequency (inverse relationship).

  2. 1.Transverse

    2.amplitude,wavelength

    3.loudness

    4.frequency

    5.slower

    6.no

    7.Doppler Effect

    8.Reflection

    9.Decibles

    10.Raised
