A part of a sentence in an essay I am writing.

...qualities that every American in the past or present can recognize.

Is the "can" correct? Is there a correct way in which to phrase this, or do you think I'm better off wording this sentence in another way?

  1. Can will work if you believe it.

    Should - may be better.

Both I believe are correct tense use.

  2. That's sounds good enough for me..

  3. It's fine, maybe you could use "would." But can works too.

  4. What about "qualities recognizable by Americans past or present".
