  1. the shaolin monks developed it, dont know which monks

  2. Legends say Bhodidharma came from India to China in the 6th Century AD or 31st Chinese Century to check on Buddhism there. He visited the emperor and many important people and saw no one whom he thought was properly observing the rites of Buddhism. At last, he came to the Shao Lin (Young Forest) Chan Buddhist temple. He sat before it for some time gazing at a spot on the wall, when the Chinese monks refused to allow a foreigner to enter. At last, the monks saw that his gaze had cut a hole in the wall, so they realized he was a true bhodisatva and allowed him to enter and teach them. They were not in very good physical condition and often fell asleep while meditating, so he taught exercises based upon the movements of animals. The monks did not carry weapons, so these movements were adapted into a hand-to-hand martial arts style.

  3. Seven Star Mantis was created by Wong Long around 1650, but it was with the other Shaolin monks at the time that filled it out.

The Shaolin 5 Animal Kung Fu was originated at the Shaolin Temple.  No one knows who actually created it.  More than likely it was a team effort by monks, not looking for any recognition.

  4. The Five-Animal Boxing of Shao-Lin is the boxing of imitation of the movements of

dragon, tiger, leopard, snake and crane.  It is said that, inspired by HUA To's "Five Animal

Exercise" (physical exercise in imitation of the movements of tiger, deer, bear, ape and bird) in the

Period of the Three Kingdoms (220-280), PAI Yu-feng, the great boxing master of the Shao-lin

School in the Yen Dynasty (1206-1368), invented his five-animal boxing (i.e., boxing of dragon,

tiger, leopard, snake and crane) by integrating the movements of the five animals with Shao-lin

boxing.  PAI Yu-feng once remarked, "the five elements in one's body, i.e., energy [or ching, the

fundamental substance which maintains the functioning of the body; essence of life], strength,

breath [or ch'i or qi], bones and spirit [or shen, mind] must be tempered alternatively through

exercises before one can feel like a celestial being."  Thus it is said that the Five-Animal Boxing,

the dragon boxing is intended to build up one's spirit, the tiger boxing one's bones, the leopard

boxing one's strength, the snake one's breath and the crane boxing one's energy or ching.

Is this what you wanted? Does this help?

  5. the founders of old styles originating back to the shaolin temples are unknown.

a weaving of both oral history and folklore has becoming the explanation for the current day styles seen.

read of the temples burning down and destruction to understand why the history was muddled.
