Quiet Oasis posted a 15 to 1 upset in the Wilshire Handicap
The Irish bred 4-year-old filly, Quiet Oasis wasn’t highly regarded going into the Grade 3, $100,000 Wilshire Handicap on 29 April, 2012, at Betfair Hollywood Park, but she didn’t value her odds of 15 to 1 that much as she showed under jockey, Mario Gutierrez, who drove the filly to a half length victory.
J. Paul Reddam owned 4-year-old filly is trained by Ben D. A. Cecil, and in a field of eight, 3-year-old and above fillies, Quiet Oasis broke best, but conceded the lead to Briecat and settled in third.
Trained by Vladimir Cerin, Briecat was ridden buy jockey Joseph Talamo, and the pair opened an advantage of couple of lengths and comfortably moved in the early stages of the race, while Quiet Oasis along with Antares World tracked the pace.
Briecat set brisk fractions in the one mile event, as she covered the opening quarter mile in 23.61 seconds, 47.63 seconds and went six furlongs in 1 minute and 11.02 seconds.
The seven-year-old chestnut filly, Briecat, has a firm grip on proceedings, and when she rounded off the bend, she found herself leading by a comfortable margin of three lengths approaching the mid stretch.
The daughter of Adcat, weakened when it mattered, and that gave Quiet Oasis the opportunity to run her down, as she did in the final furlong. She set the course ablaze from the middle of the track and looked pretty impressive doing it as she hit the wire first and covered the 1 mile distance in 1 minute and 34.63 seconds over firm going.
"We weren't sure she would get the mile. Ben was especially worried about that," Reddam admitted on TVG after the race. "The win was good for Ben. He's been a little cold."
The daughter of Oasis Dream, out of Sunday Silence mare Silent Heir, Quiet Oasis was coming off a sixth place finish in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park, also at a mile on turf back in 25 November, 2011.
She began her career as a sprinter back in Great Britain, but was stretched out in distance when she raced over the American tracks.
