Quiksilver Pro New York not to be part of ASP World Tour in 2012
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) and Quiksilver announced on Friday, December 13, that Quiksilver Pro New York will not be returning to the East Coast of America as part of the ASP World Tour next year.
Both ASP and Quiksilver expressed deep regret for cancelling the event from the next season of the elite tour. However, they pointed out that there were certain factors that had compelled them to make the difficult decision.
According to the press release by the President of Quiksilver Americas, Rob Colby, the 2011 edition of Quiksilver Pro New York had been a huge success for the surfers and fans alike, featuring exquisite performances in great conditions while getting an implausible
support from the crowd.
Colby went on to say that California-based Company will uphold its commitment with the ASP and the World Title Series next year with the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia and the Quiksilver France.
On the other hand, the Media Director of ASP International, Dave Prodan, said in his statement on Friday that, “It is unfortunate that we announce the cancellation of the 2012 Quiksilver Pro New York. 2011 instalment was a fantastic event with excellent
waves, tremendous local support and some of the best surfing we enjoyed all season. That said, we understand the factors leading to Quiksilver's withdrawal of the New York event from the 2012 schedule."
The ASP International spokesperson, however, refrained from revealing any details of the factors that had led to the cancellation of what was arguably one of the pinnacle events of ASP World Title Series.
Quiksilver was contacted for details about the startling decision to remove Quiksilver Pro New York from the 2012 ASP World Tour schedule, but the company did not respond to the queries.
The 2011 edition of Quiksilver Pro New York went down at the Long Beach from September 4-15 and featured some of the most memorable performances from the elite ASP surfers. The final of the competition took place between America’s legendary Kelly Slater
and the young Australian sensational Owen Wright. Much to everyone’s surprise, Wright had walked away with the event title after getting the better of his deadly rival, Slater, in a 35-minute final.
