Quiksilver Saquarema Prime stays on hold as event organisers await better conditions – Surfing news
A lay day was called for Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola, the second stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime schedule, on Tuesday, May 21, 2013.
The event organisers were not completely satisfied with the surfing condition prevailing at the primary event site of Itauna beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The favourable weather forecast predicted for the next few days left no doubt in their head about the best possible decision to take under the circumstances and thus they decided to postpone the opening round of the competition to Wednesday.
“With the Southwest wind that’s blowing today, we’ve decided to begin the contest tomorrow (Wednesday),” said Sergio Lindemann, of Adding Sports, which organizes the ASP Prime of Saquarema. “We’ve got some great weather coming for the remainder of the week
and we want to run heats at the best possible times. Saquarema always has quality waves and we expect some great surfing this week with many of the top surfers present.”
The competition field is comprised of 96 talented surfers from 17 different countries, including South Africa, Australia, Europe, USA and Hawaii.
The field also includes 15 surfers who are currently participating in the campaign for the coveted ASP World Championship Title. Brazilian surfer Raoni Monteiro is among them and is expected to have the local crowd cheering for him throughout his stay in
the event.
With coveted ASP points, 6,500 points to be exact, as well as a hefty prize purse of $250,000 on offer at the latest ASP Prime event, there is plenty of motivation for the surfers to give their hundred percent at Itauna beach.
If the event organisers are satisfied with the conditions prevailing at the main event site on Wednesday, then Quiksilver Saquarema Pro will kick-off with the Round of 96, featuring 96 surfers in a total of 24 heats.
Only the surfers finishing among top-two in their respective heats will advance through into the next round, while those finishing in third and fourth place will be forced to make a premature exit from the competition.
The entire ASP Prime event will be broadcasted live on the Internet.
