Quilt people... or anyone else who might know?

my grandma has a quilt that is made up of small circles sewn together. on the backs of the circles it it bunched up in the middle. does anyone know what the blanket/quilt is called?

  1. Yes, that's a Yo-Yo coverlet.  Technically, it's not a quilt.  A quilt is 3 layers of textile connected together in some way, like with yarn or thread.

    The bunched up back is actually the front of the coverlet.  They were popular back in the 30's/40's but have been in and out since then.  They are making a comeback now and the yo-yo's have other uses like embellishing jackets, sweaters, & quilt tops.  They were mostly made up of scraps but could be arranged to create patterns.  And these were cut & sewn by hand, even now.

  2. It is a yo-yo quilt/coverlet.  They were very popular years ago and used lots of small fabric pieces. Depending on how the yo-yos are arranged, some kind of pattern can be shown. Would be great if you could post a pic. Take good care of that heirloom; your grandmother would be proud.

  3. The little circles are called yo-yos.  As for the name of the design, I don't know.  It might just be a random scrap quilt.
