Quilters, can you machine quilt with cotton batting?

I've always used low-loft polyester batting. Will cotton batting work with a standard sewing machine (not a long arm)? The quilt will be for twin size bed.

  1. Many quilters feel that cotton batting is much easier to machine quilt on because it doesn't shift as much, especially if they like it to puff up later.

  2. Yes it will work well with your home machine.  I pin baste the three layers.  Stitch in the ditch wherever possible.  This locks the layers together.  Then I fussy quilt in each block.  Actually have used my Husqvarna Embroidery Unit to do a block at a time.

Suggest you use a walking foot, lengthen your stitch to 3 and lower your machine speed.

you can get much information in this website, stay a minute in website and check anyone link at a time, you can aslo get your answer in Google Search in this website, which has helped me alot

  4. I'm a sewing machine tech, not a quilter but work with many of them. You may get better answers but for sure it wouldn't hurt to just try a piece or two. I can't imagine why not so try it on some scraps and see how it goes.

    Good luck.

  5. Yes.  I have done several quilts with cotton batting, and it is excellent.  It's actually easier than poly batting to use, and makes a nicer quilt, IMHO.  :)

  6. I am not a long term quilter, but on my first quilt  I used Warm and Natural (cotton) with my cotton fabrics. It was easy as pie to get it to lay straight and even, and easy to quilt. It was a baby quilt but held together beautifully. I used a low loft poly one for the second one and had a terrible time getting it flat and straight. It turned out all right but I spent much more time pinning the poly than spraying with basting spray and getting the cotton layers even
