  1. The fabric requirement for the larger quilt is given in the link you sent. The numbers are in ().

Of one fabric you need 1 yard and of two fabrics you need 1/2 yard each. If you want your binding to match one of the fabrics you chose for the quilt blocks, you'll need to add that to the yardage. The binding is what goes around the quilt to finish the edges.

You also need to get the larger amount of backing fabric that is also listed in () in the instructions.

This is a very simple quilt to put together, just remember to sew everything with a 1/4" seam allowance.

  2. The link gives you the measurements for backing, but it gives you the same measurement as the quilt top. The backing should be larger than the quilt top. How are you planning to quilt it? You can tie it, hand or machine quilt it, or take it to someone to quilt, but no matter how you quilt it, you will need the backing to be larger. Give it at least 2" on each side. More would be better. Trim off the excess after quilting.

The binding is the finishing edge of the quilt and the final step after quilting. I cut my binding 2 1/2" and sew together in a strip long enough to go completely around the edges of the quilt, plus some inches extra to overlap at the ends. I fold it in half lengthwise and sew it to the front side of the quilt. Then I turn it to the back side and hand stitch it in place. That way there are no raw edges.

I hope none of this sounds difficult or discouraging, and if you still have questions, keep asking. Quilts and quilting are wonderful. Good luck with it.
