Quiney to make debut after injury sidelines http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 – Cricket News Update
Australian preparations for the upcoming summer have been hit badly after their coach, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rob-Quiney-c2340.
Watson was a major doubt for the tie after he picked up a left-calf strain while bowling during his only appearance for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823 in the ongoing domestic Sheffield Shield competition.
After being sent for scans, team’s performance manager, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Howard-c63371, suggested that they might use the all-rounder as purely a top six batter. However, the player himself admitted that he would like to be fully fit for the subsequent second and third Tests rather than playing as a specialist batsman.
With a cloud hanging over his involvement, Rob Quiney was brought into the national team setup as cover, only for Arthur to reveal that Watson will miss the clash altogether and will work on his fitness in a bid to remain in contention for the remainder of the series.
"http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Watson-c2558 won't play the first Test match. He did an assessment this morning. We've ruled him out," Arthur said in Brisbane on Monday. "We're hoping that he will play unrestricted in the second Test match at the Adelaide Oval. That means Rob Quiney makes his debut this week against South Africa.
"We're ruling him out now because we think he won't be fit enough come Friday. We wanted to be really decisive. We didn't want this to outplay the whole week. We wanted to make a decisive decision pretty early so we could give some real clarity to the team. I think we've done that. Unfortunately Shane misses out."
Quiney’s elevation has come a result of strong performances in the recently concluded three-day warm-up game against the touring South Africans. The left-hander held his own while the facing the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DW-Steyn-c1409 and co, managing a sturdy 85 in the first innings before remaining unbeaten on 11 in the second.
While he opened in both those innings, he is likely to slot in at no.3, a position which has yet to be filled on a full-time basis following the management’s decision to play http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377 at no. 4.
The first Test begins at Brisbane, on November 9.
