Quinn Mecham named new starter for Kansas Jayhawks
Kansas Jayhawks head coach Turner Gill has named Quinn Mecham the starting quarterback for the club’s week 11 game on Saturday 13 November.
Mecham started in the club’s week 10 win over the Colorado Buffaloes, in which he led the Jayhawks to their biggest come-from-behind victory in school history. Mecham completed 23 of his 28 passes for 252 yards and erased a 35-point deficit, ending in a
52-45 Kansas victory.
Mecham has been the starter for the past two Jayhawks games after both Jordan Webb and Kale Pick were ruled out of the line-up due to injury.
Mecham will have to make his most difficult start of the season when his club takes on the nation’s eighth ranked side, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, in an important conference match-up.
The Jayhawks have struggled all season to find their game and currently sit at 3-6 with a 1-4 record against Big 12 opponents. Their poor play has placed them in fifth in the Big 12’s North Division.
The Jayhawks' 52-point outburst was somewhat of an aberration, as the club has struggled a great deal on offence this season, ranking 82nd in the nation in passing offence, averaging a mere 189.8 yards per game. Moreover, the club is ranked 102nd
overall in points-for per game, managing an average of only 20.1 per contest.
The Jayhawks will have to be very good to end the season if they hope to obtain the six wins needed to be bowl eligible. The club has three games remaining, all of which are against Bowl Championship Series ranked teams. Kansas has to take on Nebraska in
week 11, followed by #10 Oklahoma State Cowboys and finally ending their season against #17 Missouri Tigers.
So far this season, Mecham has managed 401 yards and three touchdowns.
