Quintin Berry and Delmon Young help Detroit Tigers avoid series sweep – MLB Update
Qunitin Berry and Delmon Young were absolutely brilliant as Detroit Tigers beat Boston Red Sox 7-3 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, May 31 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball.
Jim Leyland and company have struggled to give results on consistent basis since the start of the season. Blowing away a large number of opportunities, Tigers have no one to blame except for themselves. Big hitters including Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder
and Brennan Boesch have not been able to deliver the goods on regular basis, which eventually led to Tigers’ downfall.
Young will be very pleased to get some runs on Thursday evening. He hit a mighty home-run to left in the eighth and then earned an RBI single to right in the ninth to help his team take complete control of the situation. Fielder and Cabrera also drove in
crucial runs as the offence dominated Boston’s pitching rotation.
Credit also goes to Tigers’ starting pitcher Max Scherzer who displayed top quality throwing skills. Showing great composure and control, he won for the third straight time in May, retiring the first nine batters in six plus innings.
Scherzer gave up just three runs and seven hits to close out the month on a strong note. Tigers’ fans will love to see him giving similar performances throughout this season.
"Going on the road sometimes is a good thing for the bonding aspect, but it will be nice to get back to Comerica (Park)" Scherzer said. "We didn't want to get swept."
"We just let him off the hook," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "Heck, we had his pitch count up in the 80s after four innings and we were having good at-bats. Just kind of let it slip away."
"I got back to playing my game tonight on the bases," Quintin Berry said in a post game interview.
With their win against the Red Sox, Detroit also avoided the series sweep and it will be interesting to see if they can post similar number in their next series against New York Yankees.
