Quit Manchester City Son - Ian Wright tells Shaun Wright-Phillips
Ex-Arsenal man Ian Wright advised his son to leave Manchester City if he wants to keep his place in the English national side.
Wright-Phillips’ season has been has been frustrating for him with only six appearances so far. City boss Roberto Mancini has brought high profile players in the summer and it has become extremely difficult for him to find place
in the starting line-up.
Although the player seems content to fight for his place, but his father, who played 33 games for England, wants him to find a club where he can play regular football. He would even welcome a loan move away from Eastlands.
The Arsenal legend said, "If it was up to me, I'd love him to get out of there on loan at least. We're talking about somebody who is still getting into the England squad, so Fabio Capello obviously rates him enough and knows what
he's capable of. But when you're not playing regularly, I think it's only a matter of time before he stops getting picked."
Earlier this month, the attacking midfielder played against Switzerland and Montenegro in England’s Euro 2012 qualifiers. Although he was not in the first eleven and came in the second half, but Wright knows that he is rated highly
by England boss Fabio Capello.
Ian knows how tough it is to get into Mancini’s team of superstars right now, but he thinks Shaun is not being supplied with adequate opportunities. Now, it has been more than two months since the England International started
a game and played just 45 minutes in this month’s Europa League match against Lech Poznan.
He added, “You need to be playing regularly to keep your legs going, stay sharp and show your best form. At the moment I think Shaun's finding it very hard to stay in there and keep his spirits up. I think a loan move or something
will be ideal for him in January because I can't see any future at him for City.”
Ian fears that chances for his son will further reduce in the future, as City will keep on spending and bringing in world class players that will shift him further down the pecking order.
At the moment, it feels as if he is in the 2nd string and will be only considered for competitions like Carling Cup and Europa League.
The 29-year-old spent most of his career at Eastlands. He spent 6 years at this club before signing for Chelsea in 2005 where he faced similar problems that he is facing these days at City. With Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich spending
large sums of money to buy top players in the world, Shaun’s chances of first
team football kept on reducing day by day. After spending three miserable years at Stamford Bridge, he made a move back to his old club where he was loved by everyone and achieved great success. Call it bad luck or poor form, but for Shaun it is a feeling
of déjà vu.
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who has been declared the richest man in football, bought the club in September 2008. Since that day, the club has spent over £300million on buying world’s best players, further reducing the
chances of players like Shaun. It will be interesting to see whether he follows the advice of his father or stays to fight for his place at City.
