Question:

Quitting Job after 1 Week

I started a job last monday (which I took simply because I have bills piling up) and it was completely not what I expected. The company is very divided, there's no clear-cut mission statement, and I feel extremely uncomfortable with the kind of things I hear around me. I was also not told that the person who held my position previously only stayed around for three weeks, thereby raising a red flag about the stressful situation. In short, I'm miserable and a client told me in confidence that if something better comes along, I should take it. Over the weekend I was given an offer for a job that I really want (I interviewed with them awhile ago) but they want me to start immediately. How do I go about resigning without stepping on any toes? The hiring manager was extremely nice, but my communication with her has been through email (no one else here even talks to me so I'm kind of my own boss and don't even know who is actually in charge), so should I explain the situation to her in that form?

  1. The truth is always the best. Simply explain that the job was not what you expected, and another really good job opportunity has come up.By being frank, but truthful, you can help them understand why no one wants the job. Also, seeing as this is through email, you can really look over it and over it before you send it. If you haven't met any people that you could consider being friends with outside the office, than this also makes it easier, as you do not have to keep in contact with them. Hope this helped, feel free to email me if you want to send me the draft of the email or anything: ekemish@live.com

  2. I would send an e-mail to the hiring manager stating your resignation.  Since you only had the job for about a week it would not be too much of a concern, also it does not sound like you would be returning to this company anytime soon.  Good luck with the other position

  3. the business doesnt really sound professional if they are only contacting you through email...just tell them through an email that something better and more professional came up

  4. You must work at my old employer!  I quit my job after 2 weeks.  I couldn't believe the disconnect between the interview and hiring stage and the actual job.  I knew I had made a huge mistake on Day 1 - I was totally miserable every minute of everyday.

I don't know if you can make an appt. with your manager, but try to do this in person, if possible.  You should be as honest as circumstances permit, but I would keep the attention focused on you and your new offer which is obviously a much better fit for you.  Don't bash the company or anyone associated with it, but make it clear the new position seamlessly blends with your goals/needs/career path.

If you cannot quit in person, then you shouldn't feel badly for using their preferred communication method:  email.  I am always reluctant to put important information in an email, but you may not have a choice.  Make it brief and don't include any explanations or opinions.

    Good luck and be happy!
