I'm 18, want to go back to college then uni. I work full time up at the airport, i already missed quite a few days off and my mum said i should just keep messing them around. Does it really matter? for a reference? the hours are bad anyway so i got a excuse there for missing time off.

  1. There is never an excuse for bad behavior. When someone treats you bad you remember it right? Would you hire someone who did not care about your business? This is the only job reference you have, maybe your first.

In the world of work and business your reputation and character is worth more than a pay check. These things will do more to get you a job than a degree.

If an employer has to decide between hiring two employees with very similar skills and experience,  they will look into your background in order to make the final hiring decision. If the other candidate has better job and character references, that candidate will get the job.

Attitude counts. In the long run character wins over talent. You want to win by leaving behind the best character reference you can, even from an obnoxious employer. Take the high ground.

  2. You never know how something can come back to haunt you. Let's say that 10 years from now, you apply for the job of your dreams, only to find out that your current supervisor is making the hiring decisions. You might as well use the rest of your days to leave the best possible impression.
