Quote explaination help? From the book, When the Rainbow Goddess Wept?

"Even though we were not walking single file, we had turned into ants, passive creatures who lay there helplessly"

This is a quote from the book, When the Rainbow Goddess Wept by Cecilia Brainard.

I just wanted to get a explanation on that to get a better understand of what the character is talking about.

The narrator realizes she cannot do anything to stop what is happening.  They simply give in to the soldiers, and sleep through the night.
