  1. AFIK:

My life has been filled with ... misfortune

= I always have bad things happen to me

= I have lot of bad luck

= My life is full of hardship

In the second part it is indicated that these bad things do not actually happen. This implies that the "bad things" are imagined or anticipated.

Therefore I would suggests that the speaker is indicating that (s)he is a person always worried about something that "could be bad" - which does not really occur.

In the end the quotation is then more likely a humorous or sarcastic comment given by someone else to the person who is negative or complaining.

  2. To me it means that there are some pessimistic individuals who are always afraid to take chances because they can envision many bad things happening to them so they never truly live.

  3. i think it means that ones life is terrible becuase the good stuff never happened to them..

  4. The quote is talking about missed opportunities.  Some of the biggest disappointments in life are when you look back and say "I should have..." or "I wish I had..."

I don't entirely agree with this quote, because I believe in living in the moment.  So saying, I leave you to ponder my favorite quote by Henry David Thoreau:

"Live today for today, because yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come."
