so much of the beginning is about the neglect of her and her brother. you should try reading it, even if it's just the first few chapters, it's actually very interesting.

there was a part where her and her brother had to look for food themselves because they didnt have any. and there was also a part where her mom was buying and eating sweets for herself because she was "addicted" to sweets. so she was eating all this food while her kids were starving. i guess that could be neglect but more along selfishness
