  1. (my favorite) Alfred Tennyson:

    I hold it true, whate'er befall;

    I feel it, when I sorrow most;

    'Tis better to have loved and lost

    Than never to have loved at all.

    Albert Einstein:

    Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love.

    Albert Einstein:

    How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?

    Albert Schweitzer:

    Thought cannot avoid the ethical or reverence and love for all life. It will abandon the old confined systems of ethics and be forced to recognize the ethics that knows no bounds. But on the other hand, those who believe in love for all creation must realize clearly the difficulties involved in the problem of a boundless ethic and must be resolved not to veil from [humankind] the conflicts which this ethic will involve [us], but allow [us] really to experience them. To think out in every implication the ethic of love for all creation -- this is the difficult task which confronts our age

    Amy Bloom:

    Love at first sight is easy to understand; it's when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle.

    on wisdom:

    Adlai Stevenson:

    We should be careful and discriminating in all the advice we give. We should be especially careful in giving advice that we would not think of following ourselves. Most of all, we ought to avoid giving counsel which we don't follow when it damages those who take us at our word.

    Agatha Christie:

    Good advice is always certain to be ignored, but that's no reason not to give it.

    Albert Camus:

    I shall tell you a great secret my friend. Do not wait for the last judgement, it takes place every day.

    Bessie Stanley (adapted; erroneously attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson):

    Success

    To laugh often and much;

    To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

    To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

    To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;

    To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

    To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

    This is to have succeeded.

    The madness of love

    Is a rich fief;
