Quoting a quote?

I'm taking a passage out of a novel and a character in the book is saying this passage. how do i quote it?

like.. if she said "my dog is brown." would i quote it as ' "my dog is brown." ' ?

  1. Double quotes go on the outside, and single quotes on the inside. For example,

    In Chapter 3, the author explains, "Sally's favorite activity was naming the colors of things. If she wanted to start a conversation, she was liable to approach a stranger and say, 'My dog is brown.'"
