Quoting and verb tenses?!?

I'm trying to take this quote: "burst into tears" (Lee, 179) and change it from the past tense to the present tense. How do I change the verb tense but still quote the book correctly?

  1. I would think "burst(s) into tears".

    The (s) shows that it is not in its original form.
