Qureshi/Rojer beat Huey/Lipsky to grab title – Gerry Weber Open 2012
Pakistani-Dutch combination of Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer captured their second title of the season, as they thrashed Treat Conrad Huey and Scott Lipsky in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the Gerry Weber Open final in
Halle, Germany on Sunday.
The Pakistani tennis star and his Dutch partner took just 59 minutes to win the encounter.
In the first set, both teams began by holding their serve in the first seven games and taking the score to 3-2 in favour of Qureshi and Rojer. The Pakistani-Dutch duo claimed a breakthrough in the sixth and consolidated on it to
go up 5-2. Serving for the set at 5-3, they captured four points in a row to win it 6-3.
Qureshi and Rojer pounded four aces and 64 percent of the first serves in the opener. They had a very good conversion rate, bagging 13 of the 16 first and seven of the nine second delivery points. The right-handers put away the
only break threat they came across and utilised one of the four of their own opportunities.
The Pakistani-Dutch tandem and Huey-Lipsky did not allow each other to break serve in the first six games of the second set and squared off the score at 3-3. Qureshi and Rojer struck in the seventh and won their next serve to take
a 5-3 lead. The Pakistani-Dutch pair allowed their opponents to win one more game but snatched the next one to triumph 6-4.
Talking to the media after the match, Qureshi said, “I knew it was going to be a tough final. I played Huey three times this year and Lipsky twice, so we had a little bit of an idea on what to do.”
He added, “The whole tournament, the key for us has been to stay positive and use our momentum from Roland Garros. We ended up doing it and I'm really happy with how we played during the week, dealing with the different situations
we were in. Last year, it was very special to win here. But defending a title for the first time in my career is definitely very sweet and I'd like to thank my partner Jules.”
Aisam won the Gerry Weber Open last year too, when he played with Rohan Bopanna. After a not so good start to the season, the Pakistani-Dutch duo had won their maiden team title at the Estoril Open in the first week of May. The
eighth ranked team gave an impressive showing at the French Open, where they reached the last four.
