Qureshi/Rojer bounces over Chardy/Simon to reach quarters – Rogers Cup 2012
Seventh seeds, Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Netherlands Jean-Julien Rojer, rallied past the French tandem, Jeremy Chardy and Gilles Simon, in a three-set thriller at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Thursday. They hit back to formulate a 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-5 victory
against the Frenchmen to power into the final eight at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Toronto.
The Pakistani-Dutch collaboration needed one hour and 36 minutes to dump Chardy and Simon in their first battle amongst each other. As a result, they assertively progressed into the quarter-finals and inched closer towards their third year-to-date title
at the Rexall Centre.
The French duo displayed brilliant skills in the opening set at this outdoor hard court event. Chardy and Simon blocked the lone breakpoint they faced to keep their entire serves. Regardless of squandering the only break opportunity they sought, the French
pair dominated in the tie-breaker and subsequently clicked the opener with a 7-6(5) win.
Qureshi and Rojer found the right track in the follow-up set. They swiftly plucked their entire serves after saving the only breakpoint they faced. The Pakistani-Dutch junction capitalised on one out of four break chances and clinched the equaliser with
a 6-4 score line.
Ranked eighth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Doubles Rankings, Qureshi and Rojer perfected their co-ordination in the super tie-breaker. They dominated in it to carve out the decider with a 10-5 success.
Summing up the seeds’ performance, Qureshi and Rojer smashed 13 aces to rule the battle. They jolted down a slightly lower first serve share of 65 per cent in contrast with their opponents’ 68 per cent but spectacularly availed 37 out of 47 points on it.
They spilled more errors but finished the deal with 79 points.
Next challenge for the winning duo is the fourth seeded pair, Sweden’s Robert Lindstedt and Romania’s Horia Tecau. The higher seeds crushed the Italian tandem, Daniele Bracciali and Andreas Seppi, with a breadstick to set up this clash. They easily swiped
their entire serves and cashed in three out of four break chances to formulate a 6-1, 6-4 score line.
