My fiance lived in Hawaii for 10 yrs and came back here 1 1/2 yrs ago. We are thinking about moving back. Yes I'm aware that Honloulu is a huge metropolitan area. And obviously there is a difference in culture than the mainland. I guess I'm ready for a change. My question is the things I'm so unhappy with in the midwest: finding true friends, finding a job where I'm not so overworked and feel stressed every day, feeling there are not so many friendly people, Are these things that I will have trouble with so much in Hawaii? I just honsetly want a good place with good people. I hate judging someone based on their material things. I judge people on their actions and morals. I guess I just want to make sure Hawaii will be a good fit. My fiance swears I will love it. I don't even care about isolation because I don't have a very good family or friends.

  1. I have found from living in Maui and coming from NJ that the people here are alot more laid back and nice because they do not have as much to worry about as we all do. Even the news doesn't talk about all the terrible things going on in the world as much. I find that the true Hawaiian are some of the nicest most genuine people around. The mainlanders that come to live tend to lose the attitudes as well as the other ways you might feel when you are in a more populated city. If you are looking for a nice area of Oahu, I would try Kahana or Portlock. It is close to Honolulu but far enough away to feel in a good neighborhood. Aloha!

  2. in my opinion, it sounds like you really will like living in hawaii. pretty much all those things you listed, you can find in hawaii. the culture and way of life in hawaii is all about friendliness and warmth. now granted there will always be negatives regardless of where you move but as far as the culture, friendliness is one of the most notable aspects of it. and as far as feeling stressed and overworked, while it still depends on what type of job you have, hawaii in general and its lifestyle is very easy going and laid back. its just the essence of living, very relaxed.

now remember it isn't always true with certain people and its different for everyone, everyone has their own experience, but as far as hawaiian culture in general and the lifestyle or way of life overall, its all about friendliness, good times, being laid back and easy going. pretty much what you are looking for.

now it is a big decision, and what i gave you was a general description of what the CULTURE is like, at least in relation to your situation, but that still doesn't guarantee what your experience will be like. i don't know what type of job you have or what type of people you will be around, so it all depends and your experience may vary. but the culture is all i wanted to comment on. so if you are a friendly person who is laid back and easy going, you will probably love it.

oh and it has all the conveniences of the mainland so you wont miss much.

    good luck!
