R.A. Dickey about to agree on two-year offer made by New York Mets - MLB Update
New York Mets have shifted their attention to R.A. Dickey after they clinched a lengthy contract extension with their third baseman David Wright.
Dickey, at the age of 38, is seeking contract renewal, which the Mets are willing to offer but they do not want to make it for more than two years.
The pitcher must be aware of the concerns of the team and as to what factors they will be evaluating before they ink an agreement with him.
For the same reason perhaps, he will immediately accept the offer that the Mets have granted him. Reports suggest that Dickey is on the verge of finalising a two-year contract with the club.
Although Dickey won the CY Young Award this year, he cannot ask for anything beyond a particular extent from New York. If he does so, he will probably be traded by them.
For a financially weak organisation such as the Mets, committing a huge amount of money for a player who is ageing is very difficult.
It is more so due to the recent development that they signed Wright to an eight-year deal, which will force them to allocate the bulk of their budget for him, leaving little to give other players.
What may discourage the Mets further from retaining Dickey is another recent one-year agreement signed by the New York Yankees with their 40-year old starting pitcher Andy Pettitte.
Worth $12 million accorded to Pettitte in the deal for one year has set an almost unaffordable price for others teams such as the Mets.
For example, the Mets might be thinking around $7 to $8 million per year before Pettitte’s signing by the Yankees but right now they cannot overlook this reality while offering Dickey a new contract.
In essence, the Yankees have reduced the possibility that Dickey will be awarded an agreement renewal by agreeing to a deal with Pettitte.
It is encouraging that the Mets are trying their best to keep Dickey in the club, despite the latest revelation of Pettitte’s contract.
Only time will tell as to which team Dickey plays for next year.
