R.A Dickey becomes a former New York Mets as he joins Toronto Blue Jays officially-MLB Update
The trade deal between the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays is confirmed as R.A Dickey signs a two-year worth $25 million contract extension with the latter.
The Blue Jays were given deadline by the Mets within which they had to ink an agreement with Dickey.
The fact they have done so prior to the stated time means the players that were agreed by both parties earlier will be exchanged now.
The Mets can take away the best catching prospects, among other players from the Blue Jays.
Similarly, Toronto can dare to hope for the post-season qualification during the 2013 season after acquiring the de facto ace of the Mets, Dickey.
As per the reports, the Mets have not lost much even as Dickey leaves their rotation.
The kind of prospects they received in return are capable of lifting their organisation for the years to come.
For example, catching department was the area where the Mets struggled during the last season. They lacked depth.
Even more worrisome was the fact that their regular catcher did not possess that offensive flair, which can help the team post substantial totals on the scoreboard.
Other than two catchers namely, Travis d'Arnaud and John Buck, the Mets acquired a pitching prospect in the deal.
All-in-all, the Mets’ fans have a lot of reasons to be satisfied. They have obtained future stars of their franchise without spending money in the free agent market.
Off-course, exclusion of Dickey will hurt them for a while but after the passage of a couple of years, it will be a business as usual for the Mets.
Toronto‘s General Manager, Alex Anthopoulos is ecstatic after Dickey announces on Twitter that the new contract has been signed by him.
"Clearly, he won the Cy Young. He's pitched like one the last three years," Anthopoulos said. "I think he doesn't get the credit and the respect he deserves because of his age and because of what he does throw. And I understand it's so rare. But there's
so much overwhelming data and evidence to point to him continuing this success. He's gotten better every single year."
The Blue Jays will be hoping that Dickey continues with his impressive run of form as starting pitcher during the upcoming season.
