R.A Dickey claims he is asking less than market price from New York Mets-MLB Update
A report by Andy Martino published in New York Daily News says the New York Mets have offered R.A Dickey $25 million for a three-year agreement, which includes the option for 2013. Unsurprisingly, Dickey is unwilling to agree on this.
Dickey is of the view that what he asked from the club is already well below the market price. He is extremely disappointed as the club has turned the blind eye to his actual demand.
According to the sources, Dickey is looking for somewhere around $31 million for three years.
Dickey is a reigning Cy Young Award winner. Naturally, the standard he has set for contract extension is quite high.
While the Mets may study contract value of some average pitchers in the Major League to determine worth of Dickey, the knuckleballer has different criteria in his mind.
Dickey has several reasons to claim more than what he is being granted by the team right now. The hurlers that did not perform even the half of what he did are earning hefty yearly salaries.
Mainly, he looks into their contracts to proclaim that he deserves close to a $31 million for three seasons.
Dickey perhaps has forgotten the factor of his age as it is something the Mets are concerned about. They have rightly accounted for it while deciding the value of his possible deal.
Dickey has stated, by any stretch of imagination, he has not asked unreasonably from the team.
"In the context of the market, you want what you think is fair," Dickey said. "I feel like we're asking for less than what's fair because that's how it's been for me. There is a surprise sometimes when things don't get done quickly and you already think
you're extending the olive branch. At the same time, they have a budget they have to adhere to. I don't know those numbers. And I try not to take it personally."
The talks between both the parties have started again after they stopped following the conclusion of the Baseball Winter Meetings.
Dickey will be hoping that this time around they produce something decisive so that he can focus entirely on his preparations for the upcoming season.
