R.A. Dickey earns 18th win as New York Mets defeat St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 - MLB Update
Starter R.A. Dickey delivers for the team as the New York Mets nail down a 6-2 win against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri in the last match of the three game series on September 5, 2012.
The Mets started off slowly before they culminated in the fifth.
Their starter Dickey kept the Cardinals quiet giving them hardly any opportunity to score a reasonable number of runs. Although he gave up two runs while throwing little more than six innings, he kept the Mets ahead of the Cardinals for as long as he stayed
on the mound.
Offensively the three-run home-run that the first baseman Ike Davis struck in the game proved decisive because this made it extremely difficult for the Cardinals to cut in to the lead.
As far as Mets’ relievers were concerned, all of them were scoreless while keeping the team’s lead intact. Their presence on the mound meant that the Cardinals had the best opportunity to strike a flurry of hits off their pitches and bridge the deficit.
However, the relievers showed resilience and put up a decent performance to whatever attempt Cardinals made to launch a counter-attack.
On earning his 18th win of the season, Dickey tries to shun the impression that he is vulnerable to losing focus in the midst of the celebrations. He is intent to keep on winning whenever he gets the chance on the mound.
"Obviously, I hope for that," Dickey said. "I hope to win beyond 20. As far as getting to that plateau, it would be really satisfying, I think."
Mets’ manager Terry Collins is looking forward to see Dickey clinching the Cy Young Award. However, he clarifies that even if he does not earn this glory, he boasts a lot of other laurels to be proud of.
"The whole story of what he's had to go through to get where he is today is truly one of the great stories of sports," Collins said. "I'm thrilled. I hope he wins it (the Cy Young). But if he doesn't, he's certainly had a storybook season."
The victory will be satisfying for the manager in light of the fact that New York has struggled offensively in the last couple of months.
Collins will be hoping that the offence keeps supporting his starters with substantial number of runs in the upcoming matches.
