R.A. Dickey helps New York Mets edge out Miami Marlins 4-3 - MLB Update
Starter R.A. Dickey clinches his 19th win of the season as the New York Mets outscore the Miami Marlins 4-3 at Citi Field, New York on September 22, 2012 in the second game of the three match series.
A little support from the offence has resulted into a victory for the Mets which reiterates if there is a single reason to be pointed out behind their undoing in the season so far it is the mediocrity of their hitters.
Dickey in the last game was denied the win because of a poor showing by batters at the plate providing him little to defend.
However, on Saturday he was fortunate enough to witness sufficient number of hits coming off from the hitters. He completed eight innings and gave up two runs while striking-out four.
He employed his knucklers and tricked batters as he has been doing since the beginning of the season.
With the season coming to an end, Dickey will be looking to win almost every game he starts in order to solidify his credentials for claiming the Cy Young Award.
Offensively Jason Bay smacked a two-run homer in the match which ensured the Mets an early lead.
Dickey was about to earn an extra-base hit before Bryan Petersen appeared out of the blue and caught it.
"That is as close as I'll probably ever get," Dickey said. "That was all this old man can do. I cheated on the pitch. He threw me a good pitch to hit. Everything was perfect."
Dickey was aiming at throwing the complete game and adding another feather to his cap. He produced splendours on the mound as he walked away with the win.
He has turned out to be a silver lining in the midst of losses his side is suffering.
"I had a quick eighth, so I was game to try to give the fans a treat and a complete game," Dickey said. "I felt pretty good and I told Terry, 'I'm good.' He has trusted me all year. I went back out there and tried it, and he pulled me when he needed to and
we won the game."
New York will be trying to keep the momentum going and defeat the Marlins in the last game of the series. It will be interesting to see whether their hitters can post sufficient number of runs next time.
