R.A. Dickey makes history by winning 20 games for New York Mets, first time in last 22 years-MLB
R.A. Dickey clinches his 20th win on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In turn he has become the first pitcher to have reached this milestone in the last 22 years for the New York Mets. He has been a great success story throughout this
year.
He has struck-out batters in great numbers and won games on a regular basis.
Using his knuckleballs perfectly, he has handicapped batters from striking hits against his throws in the season.
The club which has struggled immensely has found Dickey as one of the few bright spots that they had in the season.
Every time the Mets recorded long losing streaks, Dickey stepped up and kept them from derailing by winning a game. At one stage of the season, he became so predictable with regard to registering wins that even before the start of the matches he was considered
favourite for earning the triumph.
Apart from pitching, Dickey is interested in various other activities. He is an author as well a journeyman who likes to ride mountains and experience adventurous moments.
With the victory on Thursday, Dickey has solidified his credentials for clinching the Cy Young Award this year. He vies with Gio Gonzalez in this regard who though has won one more game than him, lags behind Dickey in several other categories.
As the season heads toward conclusion, the debate about the eventual winner of the Award will pick the pace.
Dickey expresses his achievements in the season in the following words. He talks of the beginning of the journey and how it has culminated into his present success in the baseball.
“Growing up, you just want to compete, and then once you have the weaponry to compete, you want to be really good, and then when you’re really good, you want to be supernaturally good,” Dickey said. “For me, there’s been this steady metamorphosis from just
surviving, to being a craftsman, and then, ultimately, the hope is to be an artist in what you do. This year is kind of representative of that for me.”
Even if the Mets have failed comprehensively in the season, Dickey has been their discovery of the year on which they will love to rely for many years to come.
